According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the Royals are expected to operate under a “very limited budget” during new owner John Sherman’s first offseason on the job. Heyman said that the Royals hope to bring back Alex Gordon and add a pitcher or two. Here are my thoughts on Royals free agency.
Yes I would love to see the Royals be in the mix for a big name free agent like Gerrit Cole, Marcell Ozuna, or Dellin Betances, but it just wouldn’t make much sense. It is more likely that the Royals make a free agency splash winter instead. The Royals won’t be a playoff team in 2020, but they could certainly make some noise the following year in 2021. Sure they’ll have some top prospects debut in 2020, but most of the other top prospects won’t be here until 2021. This is why I feel like it is more likely that they make a free agency splash next winter rather than this winter.
Some 2021 free agents that stand out are Mookie Betts, George Springer, Trevor Bauer, Robbie Ray, Marcus Stroman, Alex Colome and Andrew Miller.
2021 is the year that the Royals are supposed to be competing for a playoff spot again and so I would not be surprised if the Royals decide to not to do much this winter and wait to spend money next winter and pursue a guy like Trevor Bauer or Mookie Betts.
I can’t predict the future and so I don’t exactly know what will happen with the Royals roster between now and next winter, but something that I do know is that it’s more likely that they make a free agency splash next winter instead.
