Tottenham is in tatters. The North Londoners came into the 2019/20 season with high expectations after their heroics in Europe last season. Before the final, Mauricio Pochettino hinted that it was time to part ways with the club after a 5-year chapter that had many memories to cherish, but no trophies to offer. Yet, Spurs fans wouldn't be fretting about the lack of silverware, and in fact, would be delighted with the Argentine tactician making them regular top four contenders.
Today, Spurs sit in 14th in the Premier League, with their last win being against Southampton at the end of September. Throughout this season, Poch's men had endured several embarrassing results. Yet after the 2-7 Annihilation at the hands of Bayern Munich and 3-0 battering by Brighton, Poch is still at the helm.
So, here's an analysis on what's going wrong at Tottenham.
I. Forcing the Stale Mates to stay
Many in the squad wanted to leave for a new challenge. The Eriksen rumours made the most noise. Yet Poch had managed to keep most of his core intact and somehow made them stay. But there is a visible lack of commitment and frustration that can be seen in the camp. Poch made a severe mistake in not letting go of those who wanted to leave.
II. Injuries to the signings
Spurs' reinforcements this season were N'dombele, Lo Celso, and Sessegnon, and all of them fell prey to injury. We know that they did not make any signings at all last season. And so, the rivals have gotten used to their strengths and have devised countermeasures. The lack of any 'element of surprise' has proven to be costly for the Lillywhites.
III. Poor team selection
It is quite clear that Lucas Moura hasn't been getting the game time he deserves, and Poch has been adamant with his tactics. The same 4-2-3-1 with Son being the only winger, and no plan B whenever they concede first. Further, there hasn't been enough service for Kane to make use of.
Poch's future is uncertain, and this is an added confusion to the camp. The top four chances seem bleak, but if they are to have any remote chances, then they should take action soon. The players need to wake up and realize that the season is on the line.
