There’s two questions I get asked about training VERY often: 1️⃣ WHY do soccer players need to lift? 2️⃣ WHY do soccer players need to sprint more, instead of long-run conditioning? . If you’ve followed me for more than 24 hours, you probably know my answer to BOTH of these! But I want to tackle Question 2 once and for all. . Meet the Anaerobic Speed Reserve. It’s your king, and you didn’t even know it! . The ASR is the space between your Max Sprint Speed (absolute 100%) and your Max Aerobic Speed (your Velocity at your Vo2Max). . It matters a L O T because having a bigger ASR means you’ll work a lot less hard to run fast over time. . To put it overly simple: it makes you more economical. You won’t start fatiguing at the 70’ when playing at a high tempo. . SOUND GOOD?! . So how do you increase your ASR? . By increasing your Max Speed. By sprinting your face off. By getting fast. . That’s literally the only way. . Peep the graphic again. Based on the size of their ASRs and amount of MSS, which athlete do you think will fatigue faster? The one who can hit 30 km/hr or the one with 26 km/hr when average game speed is only 20 km/hr? 🧐 . Bet on it! . So, if you’re stuck putting in absurd long runs every day in the name of “conditioning”, I am so sorry. Please be REALLY tight on your injury prevention (as your risk goes WAY up with that kind of volume), and put in some sprints. Unfortunately, pure conditioning can actually have the inverse effect. . Get fast. It makes you able to run faster for longer with less effort. THAT’S how you win. #longgame . (Otherwise the #USWNT will be staying on all your necks until further notice!!! QUESTION: what does “core training” really mean? What are we doing (besides sweating and wanting to cry)? . . On a quick scroll through twitter today, I saw post featuring a stereotypical white girl summer six pack and a graphic next to it saying “how to get a summer six pack!”, lauding the “1000 crunches and 5min plank holds” per day rule. . . It’s shocking to me still that, even in 2019 when we value science and health, those kinds of fundamentally false and misleading posts are allowed without any kind of backup, AND that people still buy into it. . . But, whenever I complain, I try to offer a solution as well. . . Solution: Here are 4 exercises that not only make your abs want to cry and detox the life out of your sweat cells (lol detox), but also actually work. . . I’m not a fan of wasting time in workouts, and core training is a FUNDAMENTAL part of strength and speed training WITHOUT extra focused attention on the abs. . . However, some athletes do truly benefit from or just enjoy a good core circuit. No shame in that! . . But, don’t waste your time. Focus on core training that’s foundational, functional, works more than just your abdominals, and forces you to keep your pelvis still!! . . BONUS: if you truly want a six pack, check the contents of your fridge and ditch the sit-ups. . . Give these a go and let me know how you feel after! . . TAG somebody who needs to STOP doing saggy 5min planks and START training for real.

There was some room left on some of the #tests and I've seen her push harder on some of the lifts in #training. But that's perfectly fine because in #programming we are relying on every day maximum, not peak performance data.
