On November 30th (the last day of @movember 👨🏻) I will be running 60km around Sydney in honour of the 60 men we are losing to Suicide every 60 minutes across the globe. Yes, on average one man dies by suicide every minute. My hope is to bring our community together around this very important cause and Move for Movember with me. Anyone is welcome to run part of the course with me, which will be two big 30km laps of the eastern beaches, city and city2surf route; starting and finishing at Bondi Beach.
I’ve had a really fucking tough year, psychically, mentally and emotionally (I’ll share more over the next 2 weeks). I only decided two days ago that I would do this 60km run, but it’s been on my mind for a couple of weeks. I haven’t been running since June because of injuries and life just simply getting in the way. Two weekends ago I reconnected with running and met an amazing community during the 5am @the_440 run club at Bronte. These legends have a Movember team I’m now part of and together as a community we are all making a real difference for Men’s health.
So, I’ve never run further than 30km!! My ankle is tied together with pins and screws after reconstructive surgery in 2017. This is going to be tough both physically and mentally, and I might not be able to finish it. But my only chance is to have the support of my community. For me this run and journey has a lot of metaphors for living with mental illness; in my case depression, anxiety, PTSD and suicidal thoughts. It’s brutal, exhausting and debilitating. Recovery in mental health is a marathon not a sprint. A day at a time, sometimes just one step at a time. Most people are not prepared for a mental health crisis, often it hits with no warning. So we need to reach out for help, speak up and lean on our support network.
My longest run in 4 months is yesterday’s 10km trot with @jorginjimmy. Jimmy is a level 4 Athletics Australia Coach and is the Official City2Surf & SMH half marathon Coach with a wealth of experience from complete beginners to National champions. Jimmy jumped at the opportunity to get on board with me because he’s a true legend with a real passion for (continued in comments 👇🏼)
