. DA’ DIP — Both versions of dips we will talk about require a certain degree of shoulder extension. Moving into this position is not bad, but it will depend on a few variables, such as how much range you possess, how often you perform dips, and with how much load. . 🔹Forward lean. Less shoulder extension and more chest. For a majority of people looking to utilize dips, this is probably your best option for purposes of strength and hypertrophy. . 🔹Upright. More shoulder extension and more tricep. Due to the requisite amount of shoulder extension required, it might not be appropriate for everyone. . Considerations for upright would be if you are looking to improve extension (loaded mobility) or if currently performing muscle ups. . Also shown are progression (weighted) and regression (assisted) variations to utilize with either position. . Which version do you perform? . “When I dip you dip we dip.”

The scapula and the pelvis have a synergistic relationship. When the scapula retracts the pelvis (should) tilt forward (anteriorly). When the scapulas protract the pelvis (should) tilts backwards (posteriorly). I find many people have a lumbar arch but the position is being held more by the hip flexors and lumbar erectors than the scapulas contributing. This leads to less than efficient movement as well as compensations. This exercise asks the lumbar spine to relax and asks the hips to internally rotate. We then ask the person to retract and depress their scapulas and hold somewhere between 4-6 minutes. I use this exercises often for athletes because they are on a plan that does cleans, upright rows, shoulder presses and lateral flys. Done daily for 21 days this can lead to major breakthroughs! If you suspect to suffer a medical condition / dysfunction and/or experience pain seek out a trained professional to address your problems instead of relying on generalized advice on social media❗⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ 📝 Just wanted to spread a little awareness today about the pelvis position in the (high-bar) squat setup. When setting up to squat down we want our pelvis to be in a neutral and spinal friendly position instead of having it tilted anteriorly or posteriorly. Picture a bucket of water that resembles your pelvis: you don't want it to spill water forwards (anterior pelvic tilt) nor backwards (posterior pelvic tilt).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ ➕ But how do achieve a neutral pelvis in the squat setup? As long as the lifter doesn’t suffer any severe dysfunction the following sequence can prove beneficial: (1) create lower body tension via joint torque (“screw feet into the ground / rotate knees & hips externally”). Subsequently (2) squeeze your glutes together which pushes the pelvis into a neutral position. In order to maintain this position (3) diaphragmatic breathing becomes crucial: “try breathing into your lower back”. Keeping those three points in mind surely should help to cue you into maintaining a more neutral pelvis. DID YOU KNOW THIS?🤔 - Hanging ab exercises are some of the best core exercises you can do! They are not an easy movement to execute so you will need to slowly progress your way up by working on your core through compound and isolation excercises such as squats, deadlifts, planks, hanging leg raises, etc. - Start first with the knee to bar, strict form is always best! Don't compensate by using momentum, your abs will thank you for it on the beach! I like to use an overhand grip, once you can do 15 or more with strict form add a light ball between your feet or progress onto the knee to bar! - Once you feel that you're ready for the knee to bar go for it, here are the steps to do the movement: 1️⃣ When you’re ready to begin, grap the pull-up bar so that your hands are slightly wider than shoulder width apart. 2️⃣ Hang from the bar with a straight back and engaged core. 3️⃣ Keep your legs together and bring your knees to your elbows. 4️⃣ Then, kick your toes and feet to the bar. Depending on skill level this can either be done with the help of a kipping motion for momentum, or strict. 5️⃣ Keep your arms straight as you bring your toes to the bar. 6️⃣ Drop legs back down slowly so that you are in control of the descent. I don't think there's much wrong with this, as long as you take into account that how your muscles exactly look when they grow for a large part depends on genetic factors. - For example, where your muscle inserts (where it attaches to bone) dictates the size of your muscle bellies. Because of this, two similarly developed biceps can look quite different. Also, the way your bone structure is set-up can also make you look quite different than someone of your size & body fat percentage. See the picture of the biceps above for a good example. - This is part of the reason why I prefer to make people focus on improving the way they currently feel and look, rather than trying to look exactly like someone else. This not only over-engages the upper trap muscles, which tend to be overdeveloped already, but it also puts the shoulders in a vulnerable position. If you ever experience shoulder discomfort during pushups, this positioning error may be the cause! - In the bottom photo, you can see that I have “anti-shrugged” my shoulders by creating space between my upper traps and ears. This helps to engage the lat muscles and relaxes the upper traps. I also have my elbows closer to my body, pointing about 45 degrees away, which helps to keep my shoulders in a more optimal position! The patient presented with pain behind her shoulder. Using AK muscle testing I found active stress physiology, then muscle imbalance, then vertebral and Humeral (upper arm) misalignment. By working later by layer, the body is able to let go of these aberrant patterns. Using NET I cleared several layers of emotional memory muddying up her physiology in her shoulder. I released and reset her Infraspinatus with ART. This is the weakest of the four shoulder stabilization muscles. Her Atlas (C1) was subluxated and her upper arm was superior (compacted) so I adjusted those. Then I Rocktaped the Infraspinatus and gave her scapular stabilization exercises from @webexercises. I also supported the energetic shift in her system with a specific homeopathic remedy by NET. I think of these remedies as energetic Rocktape - a way to continue the treatment through the week. It really does take a village to balance a body. I am grateful to have access to so many different techniques. Optimize Your Quad Stretch . 🔎There are 4 muscles that make up your quadriceps: vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius and rectus femoris. . 👀The rectus femoris is an interesting one because it actually performs 2 actions: knee extension AND hip flexion. . 🧠To make sure ALL of the quad muscles are on stretch, we’ll want to make sure we’re addressing both joints that the rectus femoris crosses (the knee AND the hip)! . ❌In the first photo you’ll see my knee is bent, but look at that hip! This position is leaving slack in the rectus femoris. . ✅ Here I’ve got my hip in a neutral position (you can extended back more if you’re careful not to heavily arch your back) that puts all 4 muscles on full stretch! . ➡️ Go get your stretch on this Saturday morning, and of course let me know if you have any questions!

This will allow for the unwinding of the daily use of your chest muscles from activities that are always infront of us. I believe that oftentimes it is not necessary to come up with a precise diagnosis. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Focus on avoiding exposure to the range of motion that is currently problematic and slowly re-introducing this sensitive position it over time as you begin to build more tissue tolerance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Things to consider when dealing with pinching in the ankle: - modify the painful movement to avoid irritating the tissue further - consider opening up and distracting the ankle joint if it provides you with some temporary relief - then load the tissue up to the point of discomfort with a graded exposure approach to improve your tolerance to a certain range of motion . They all carry out slightly different functions. For example, the anterior head helps to flex the shoulder joint (lift arm up in front of body), the posterior head is responsible for transverse abduction and hyperextension of the shoulder & the lateral head helps abduct the shoulder joint (lift arm up and away from the body to the side). . With all of this in mind, it’s then important to include exercises in your training regimen that hits all of these functions. Most pressing movements will hit your front delts quite well and side raises (cable or dumbbell) are your best best for the lateral deltoid. . The posterior (rear) delts are often the most neglected of the three heads, but can really help to add width to the top of a physique, as well as giving your delts a rounded appearance from the side. A healthy joint can move freely in all directions, regardless of the demands placed on it. If you flex a joint, however, and then it’s significantly difficult to extend it, that is a sign something is amiss. Say you lie on your bent elbow watching TV. You go to extend (straighten) your elbow and it’s slow to straighten. If it straightens fully in a few seconds or after a few attempts, that’s fine. But if it it becomes harder to reverse that bent position, or you can’t regain a straight elbow, the joint is misbehaving. •••• If you kneel a lot, you should still be able to straighten your knee. If you bend your back over a spin bike, your ability to bend all the way backwards should not be impacted. If you extend your wrist up typing for hours, you should not lose the ability to bend your wrist down. •••• Importantly, when people stretch muscles, they are usually moving joints aggressively in one direction or another. So, after stretching your hamstrings by touching your toes (which flexes your spinal joints), you should maintain the capacity to move your spine all the way back. When stretching muscles, joints must not be negatively affected. •••• When I assess a joint’s behavior, I ensure that no motion is lost in other directions by performing a specific movement. If the patient’s home program is to extend her neck, then she needs to know that at no point should that movement (“exercise”) create more stiffness in flexion, rotation, or side bend. In fact, it’s helpful if the patient routinely checks to ensure other motions either stay the same or improve. Losing motion in other directions is an indication to stop the prescribed movement - which applies to both the spine and extremities. •••• The ultimate goal is full motion in all planes – and the ability to move in any plane without losing motion in the others. Last night Nicole & I went out with some friends for some axe throwing. . ❗️It works your shoulder muscles, lats, hamstrings, calf muscles, & even your core. In order to achieve a proper throwing motion, one must know how to activate these muscles simultaneously throughout the entire motion. This same concept can be applied to all types of overhead sports such as baseball, tennis, volleyball, football, lacrosse, & even someone throwing a javelin❗️ . ⁉️⁉️Did you know: the function of the shoulder is to actually place the upper extremity in space so the hand can perform its proper functions. . 🤾🏼‍♂️🤽🏼‍♀️Overhead/Throwing Motion: The overhead motion begins with coordination between the upper & lower body using core activation, particularly the transversus abdominis. W/o a stable core it is difficult to generate any power into your throws or serves, depending on the sport. . ❗️A person must have stable shoulder joint to have consistent and injury-free throwing mechanics. B/c of the amount of rotation that goes into the arm during a throw, any type of misalignment or subluxation to the shoulder can lead to muscle fatigue & thus put the shoulder at risk to be injured. . ❗️Some common injuries to overhead athletes include Impingement syndrome, Rotator cuff tears, and Labrum tears. . 🔜Shoulder stability exercise videos coming soon!
