Forthbank stadium, home of Stirling Albion, was the venue this week as we took in our first footballing foray of the new year. With the Binos hoping to rack up a third victory on the bounce, the visit of Annan Athletic had all the promise of a thrilling encounter.
However, all hope of an action-packed tussle seemed to fade as the game descended into a glorified game of longies with both keepers vying to see who could punt the ball the furthest. After 15 minutes of route one stuff, Annan took the momentous step of playing the ball along the ground and the game began to open up into a much freer flowing affair.
Despite looking the more likely, Annan failed to capitalise and it was the home team that opened the scoring. Squirming himself a yard of space Jardine sent a probing cross low into the six-yard box. After a tussle with Swinglehurst, the ball dropped kindly for Peter MacDonald to poke it home. Stirling almost doubled their advantage before a defensive mishap cost them their lead. With the game finely poised at half-time we stole away in search of scrumptious delights.
A shallow pie offering from Stirling Albion with the pastry casings not even filled up to halfway with mince. The scotch pie equivalent to a packet of Walker’s crisps. Thankfully the lack of filling was made up for in flavour and the little meat on offer was punchy and sapid. The pastry itself was crisp and light, which complimented its contents with aplomb.
Thankfully our pies were finished before the resumption of play as the refereeing decisions caused for a hail of spittle and vitriol to rain down upon us from aggrieved Binos fans. After a strong and arguably fair challenge on Chris Johnston was deemed a foul something along the lines of, “I disagree with your choice of decision referee”, may have been uttered but I cannot be sure. The home supporters’ frustrations were compounded when Docherty, after being goaded into an off the ball confrontation, was sent off. However, if anything the sending off galvanised Stirling Albion and Peter MacDonald managed to sneak a second goal and secure a hard fought 3 points.
