There’s a common misconception that heavy lifting is harder and more damaging on joints than cardio/running. While there are differences between the 2 and everything comes down to form, the math doesn’t agree with the old myth. ————— Take our fake 150 pound athlete. When comparing them running a mile vs their 1 rep max squat test. When comparing overall volume of the 2 activities, there’s some glaring differences. —————— Being that the average person will put 2-2.5x their bodyweight on each leg when running, lets be conservative and say it’s on the low end. When equating the same weight to the squat max, the overall volume of the actives are not even in the same league. The squat having an overall volume of 300 while the mile on the same person is over 600,000 🤯 ——————— So what’s the point? The people who don’t know anything will often times warn you about “those heavy weights” while not mentioning a word about the run you do every weekend. The assumption is that you can do more damage by screwing up a lift...I would argue the opposite. —————— It’s ABSOLUTELY true you can screw your self up lifting, but it’s usually immediate and acute, or in other words, you’ll know you screwed up RIGHT AWAY. Running however? Last session before switching to a four day split Squats were 265lbs for a top set of 5. I went into it not knowing how my knee was gonna react to it but it went alright, was still unsure about it so went with two backoff sets at 225lbs for 5. Presses were great to be honest though I leaned a little too far forward; 100lbs for 3 sets of 5. Decided to do mixed grip today even though I've never done it before, went pretty well! 295lbs for a set of 5 to recover my honor for losing grip last time. On this edition of 5/3/1 bench day: Wayne Gretzky said it best, “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. Went for 10 reps got 9 1/2 😂. Still a PR by one rep. On my five rep weeks I’ve been dropping down to 60% of my top set and doing 3 x 3 vs red bands As a secondary movement. I’m sure and steady progress for three consecutive cycles so I’m gonna keep on. Followed up with lat pulls, Face pulls, And a banded tricep beatdown. Stupid simple, I really don’t over complicate bench day. Here are the big picture takeaways with load management: 1️⃣The general theories surrounding load management center around attempting to protect athletes against injury, as well as aiming to plan athlete workloads for long term performance optimization. 2️⃣We can’t predict or prevent each and every injury, and in many cases complete rest isn’t an optimal solution for injury prevention or performance. 3️⃣When it comes to preparing athletes for performance, we have to understand the specific demands of the actual competition- as well as respect the demands of maintaining a high standard of preparation for competition via practice and training. The big picture takeaway: it’s critical to prepare the athlete for the path to success with high quality performance training, rather than attempting to frequently alter the path for the athlete! Week 3 day 3 SEASON OPENER TOMORROW! First rugby match of the season for us @hbrugby. Had to get a little baby lift to keep the body sharp. _ It’s not uncommon to workout before athletic events. These types of workouts usually include low volume (sets and reps) but high intensity (effort) plyometrics, activation sequences (core, glutes, shoulders, ankles) and mobility work. Luckily, Olympic weightlifting is plyometric, mobility and stabilization all in one. _ You don’t want a lot of reps or weight weight to fatigue the muscles, and too don’t want too much intensity to fatigue the CNS. Of course these numbers change depending on your normal training volumes and intensities so it will be different for everyone. Experts can handle more volume while novices - a lot less. _ I did a couple Oly complexes at about 82% of my 1RMs. Probably heavier than I should have 😂🤷🏻‍♂️. In retrospect I’ll probably keep it closer to 60-70% next time. But since the volume was low, I’ll be fine. _ A1. Snatch pull + snatch + OH squat 5x1 B1. Brilliant podcast emphasising the importance of strength training and the basic principles to follow when prescribing and increasing load! The physical activity guidelines suggest that strength training twice weekly is optimum but sometimes this is forgotten and greater emphasis placed on cardiovascular training! This is a single leg variation I played around with today. Idk exactly what to call it but it was fun and it was a challenge. I love single leg work so I’m always trying to find new ways challenge my single leg strength and stability. Counterbalanced single leg squat to box straight into a single leg RDL (maybe even a little bit of a skater squat). I even noticed I got a little bit of hip mobility out of it. Concentrate on moving with control and keeping the stance foot driven into the ground with a stable foot. Definitely worth giving it a shot! #singlelegsquat #strengthandconditioning

Where so many seconds can be gained or lost. @coach_steve_davis tips for a fast T1: ✅ High cadence shorts steps across the sand. ✅ Wetsuit off and down below your hips. ✅ Cap and goggles off. ✅ Once at your bike, remove wetsuit to below knees. ✅ Stamp out of your wetsuit while putting on helmet & sunnies. ✅ Flick wetsuit off your ankles. ✅ Grab your bike and run fast out of T1. ✅ Run through the mount line as far as you need to to avoid other athletes. ✅ Keep your feet on top of your shoes until you are up to speed, then put your feet in.
