💥BACK FINISHER💥 - This was my first workout after being out a whole entire week with the worst food poisoning of my life. I wanted to tax my back and keep the intensity high despite not feeling 100% so I came up with this. - I would started with 10 reps of barbell rows and 2 pull ups. I did 5 total sets for both movement supersetting the exercises. - Each subsequent set, I would decrease the reps of barbell rows by 2 and increase the reps of pull ups by 2. It would look like this... - BARBELL ROWS: 10 - 8 - 6 - 4 - 2 reps PULL UPS: 2 - 4 - 6 - 8 - 10 reps - I rested between 1-2 minutes. Here’s the first, third, and last set. As you can tell, I was smoked by the end despite the light weight. If you gotta use less weight, make it harder somehow.

2 new PRs for my friend & programming client @kacywinkle + Yesterday she hit a 230 sumo deadlift and a 195 lb squat. In a few days she’ll be testing her push press 1RM, pull ups for max reps and dips for max reps. + Kacy had spent 8 weeks on a strength phase. I’ve always been a big fan of spending the winter months to focus on developing strength and power for those who aren’t year around strength athletes. Now we’ll dive into an 8-week hypertrophy cycle that will take us into April where she will hit an 8-week fat loss cycle that will end in June...right in time for summer to not just be lean...but be jacked, strong and athletic! + It’s my hope to get more people to buy into this year around programming approach. If you aren’t bought in, don’t show up, don’t go into something half-assed, in my opinion if you’re going to go in, you should be willing to go all in. That changed the way I did business, made friendships, trained, if I’m honest, it probably cascaded and effect almost every aspect of my life. It also meant that when I decided to do something, I committed. On multiple occasions I doubted my own abilities, questioned if I had made the right decision, was extremely nervous at the idea of going all in and failing (yeah I was also the kid who didn’t revise for exams). Point is, I’m no expert, but in my opinion if you want in, like really really want in, you should be prepared to go for it. But it’s also more than okay to say “No, thank you” when something isn’t conducive to move you forwards whatever that might look like. #battalionbarbell

OPIOIDS PRESCRIBED 2x MORE THAN PT FOR MUSCULOSKELETAL PAIN This recent report from the National Institute of Health perfectly describes why we are in the predicament with opioid abuse in the United States. When patients go visit a PA or MD for a primary complaint of musculoskeletal pain, they are being prescribed opioids over 20% of the time versus Physical Therapy at 10%! This is a complete and utter failure of demonstrating utility for the physical therapy profession and a lack of proper management from the medical side. Failure on both sides. An interesting paper looking at the effects of stretching on performance and strength . 45 young athletes had their hamstring eccentric strength measured with an isokinetic dynamometer, 20m sprint distance and triple hop taken . They were then allocated into 3 groups, control, dynamic stretching and static stretching . Those in the static stretching group performed a stretch similar to the above for 3 sets of 30 seconds 3x/week for 3 weeks . They were retested after 3 weeks . What they found was that the static stretching group had a significant reduction in strength and performance . ~15.4% reduction in eccentric hamstring strength was seen as well as 3.7% reduction in triple hop distance. Given the literature on eccentric strength and its risk on hamstring strains this is something to consider and possibly something to remove . What do you guys think? . Barbosa, G. M., Trajano, G. Rule #1: You have to turn up I had a client turn up with a shoulder twinge yesterday. This meant we had to be creative with his two main movements to avoid exacerbating it. Front squat was changed to Safety Bar Cyclist squat to still overload the quads as was the aim. Multiple eccentrics on flat press was changed to what you see in the photo. Bottom up/dead press with a 3” diameter bar and chains added. Result after warm up was no pain in pressing which was an improvement on Tuesday’s bench sets. You can tell a lot about the client/athlete when they get a small injury. The ones that turn up and adapt and do something even with a small amount of pain go far. Those that piss and moan, make excuses, are usually the ones that are static in terms of results. I rarely see results in anything from someone who does nothing. And week if you let it. This is something that a lot of people "struggle" with. As a coach, unless you are an athlete or have an event that you are "dieting" for, I don't see the need to be overly restrictive or boring. If you have an specific goal then yes absolutely sort your shit out and leave no stone unturned. However if you're the average person who just wants to tidy up their eating habits, lifestyle habits and exercise habits long term, there is no need to be excessively strict. 🔥When should you heat an injury?🔥 There is often a lot of confusion as to whether heat or ice an injury. The truth is it depends on a number of factors. If you use the incorrect treatment, it may cause more harm to your injury. 🔥When an injury first occurs, it's in the acute inflammatory phase. The inflammatory process starts with increased blood flow to the area. Damaged cells are removed and the body begins to put new collagen in the area of injury. By using heat during this time you're increasing blood flow to the area and causing more potential swelling to the injury. 🔥Heat is mainly used for chronic conditions (3-6 months old or longer) to help stimulate blood flow to the area and relax tissues. The no.1 Triceps Exercise and some points to consider for Triceps training: . 📽 Crucifix Pressdowns: •Lock your shoulder blades together. •Your arms become an extension of the cables. •Contract your triceps throughout the entire range of motion. •This exercise is great for people who struggle with shoulder pain as the front Delts and chest are taken completely out of the movement. . Other Triceps considerations: •If your shoulder blades aren't locked, your ability to contract the triceps will be downregulated. I don't care if you're doing dips or single arm Pressdowns, lock your shoulder blades together. As a byproduct, your shoulder health will improve and you will build your mid trap. •A fully shortened Tricep is a fully stretched bicep and a fully stretched tricep is a contracted bicep. You don't have to hit Full ROM within an individual exercise, but over the course of the session make sure you have worked the target muscle through the Full range. •Don't wait until the end of the movement to contract your triceps, you should be initiating the movement with a contraction and maintaining that throughout the whole range of motion. •How frequent? How many sets? How many reps? How many exercises? These points are all irrelevant until you master the above. When you do that, you can then explore set and rep schemes and I will assert you will achieve more doing less as you will get more out of each and every rep

It seems simple, but most people would be surprised by the amount of people we come across that can’t do a basic split squat! . Split squats are a good first progression into single leg exercises (although technically split squat/lunge variations aren’t true single leg exercises). Once the split squat is nailed, then you can progress to other variations. . A typical progression might look like: • Split squats ⬇️ • Reverse lunges ⬇️ • Rear foot elevated split squats . There are many different ways to progress single leg exercises (you don’t even need to change exercises, eg you could progress from kettlebells to a barbell), and the way it’s done will be specific to each individual person! . Didn’t feel like training but got in some legs tonight. Here’s the training session - 1️⃣Seated leg curls 4 x 20 - failure 2️⃣Leg extensions 4 x 20 - failure 3️⃣Machine squats 4 x 15 4️⃣Hammer Incline Press 3 x 15-10 5️⃣Machine leg press + walking lunges 3 x 6 reps (5 sec eccentric & concentric), 20 steps *this will kick yo ass 6️⃣Standing leg curls 3 x 12 7️⃣Calf Raises 3 x 15 8️⃣Glute-Ham raise 3 x 15 - I threw in an incline chesticle press because why not. I am building my chest to thickems em up - Peep the machine leg press. It’s only 6 reps but multiply that by taking 5 seconds to press the weight & 5 seconds to lower it. That’s a 60 second Time Under Tension set. And go as heavy as you can for every set with proper form. Ishh no joke 😅 you’ll feel all sorts of muscles you normally would never feel by doing leg presses the way 99% of people do it - Total time: 63 minutes - Call me King TUT 🤴🏻 🌍🌳♾
